Initially Car of the Year 1972  (Motor Trend magazine) the SM proved a commercial failure and in 1974 was even banned in the US due to new design regulations.  Only 12,920 Citroën SM were produced between 1970 and 1975.   Peugeot finally bought the company when it became bankrupt.  Incidentally, Columbo’s car was a Peugeot 403 cabriolet.
