Artist – Jane Cope

As a book illustrator for many years, the ‘storytelling’ picture and cartoon is home ground for Jane and so is text. So it’s not surprising that many of her paintings fringe on this familiar narrative territory. But much of her work takes delight in Devon landscapes/cityscapes and industrial structures – the fragile coexistence of manmade and natural.
Jane uses newsprint on her canvases, rather like underpainting. It creates texture and layers of meaning, sometimes random sometimes deliberately chosen, that peep through the picture we see on the surface. She sees layers, ambiguity, metamorphosis, the bendy perspective that is her hallmark, as all a familiar part of our uncertain world – and a source of humour too.
