If you’ve travelled on the road linking the Exeter M5 services to the roundabout on the Sidmouth Road at Clyst St Mary, you’ve probably not noticed the inconsequential looking, long spanned bridge crossing the marshy river Clyst that has been the site of several major conflicts through history. Most notable was the battle and consequent massacre attributed to the Prayer Book Rebellion. It’s said that a thousand Cornish and Devonians were left dead, and more than 900 prisoners were taken, who were ruthlessly massacred later in the day. See the digital magazine for the full story:
