A great ‘Raleigh’ day out in East Budleigh
If you have a passion for English history, it doesn’t get much more interesting than East Budleigh, because it’s the place where Sir Walter Raleigh was raised as a child.
For such a humble little village, there are some remarkable remnants from the Elizabethan age to be seen. Indeed, Queen Elizabeth herself was on friendly terms with Sir Walter and he was a favourite at court.
MOST NOTABLE RELICS:
Raleigh 400 Ale at the Sir Walter Raleigh Inn
All Saints Church. The Raleigh pew amongst other remarkably carved pews. Also, whilst inside, don’t miss the portrait of Sir Walter on the wall.
The Raleigh monument on the corner of Vicarage Road and Yettington Road.
The Boyhood of Raleigh by Millais will be available to view this summer from 28th May until 31st of August at Fairlynch Museum.
Salem Chapel. You have to phone to arrange permission to view (01395 445236), but it’s an interesting little church owned by the Historic Chapels Trust. Smuggling, hauntings, religious dissent, it all happened here.
Hayes Barton, Raleigh’s boyhood home. Can be viewed from the roadside.
GREAT PLACES TO EAT
In East Budleigh – the Sir Walter Raleigh Inn – why not try a Raleigh 400 Ale whilst dining. Please phone to check times of food service.
In Otterton (just down the road) – Otterton Mill, situated in a beautiful spot down on the river Otter. Also, the Kings Arms, a lovely pub with great food and ambiance, also having a large beer garden at the rear.
