Higher Uppacott – Dartmoor Longhouse
Sometimes one can’t help being filled with wonder. The occasion for me was a visit to Higher Uppacott on Dartmoor, an in-tact 14th century Dartmoor Longhouse (a variant of the Devon Longhouse). It provides a unique view of life in the mediaeval period, around the time of the Black Death, and is pure social history, graphically wrenching you back to the basic realities of life through living off the land. It’s currently being restored by the Dartmoor National Park. It’s one of Devon’s great treasures, you can read more about it in the digital version:
