Now in its sixth decade, the South West’s famous discount…
A special exhibition featuring captivating images of local life in a bygone era opens at the DEVON RURAL ARCHIVE at Shilstone, near Modbury, this week.
Entitled “Picture Perfect”, the photographic display will be on show from March through to October and showcases the buildings and landscapes of towns and villages of the South Hams in days gone by. Images of Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Totnes, Bigbury, Kingston, Aveton Gifford, Modbury, Bantham, Hope Cove, Bittaford, Ugborough, South Milton, Thurlestone, Newton and Noss, and Yealmpton among others, are included in the exhibition.
“Some of the images date back to the early 20th century,” explained Abi Gray, Resident Archaeologist at the DRA, “and all have been chosen from the tens of thousands of pictures, from all over Devon, that are stored in our Image Bank. We hope visitors will enjoy the display both for its picturesque content and to see how much each of the locations has changed over the years.”
The exhibition is open on Mondays (except bank holidays), Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 3pm and entry is free. Visitors will also be able to peruse the DRA’s archives to explore other areas of local history they might be interested in.
If visitors to the exhibition know anything about any of the images on show – for example about the buildings depicted, any social history associated with them or what they are like now – the DRA would be very interested in hearing about it.
They would also welcome people bringing in their own photos of the places shown to be scanned and added to its collection – including modern photos of the towns and villages to demonstrate how places have evolved over time.
“The more images depicting our local history that we can add to the Archive, the better we can record our history for future generations and contribute to tomorrow’s history. Our grateful thanks to all those who have contributed photographs and postcards to the DRA Image Bank since its inception; to our volunteers who are cataloguing and digitising the vast collection, and of course our visitors, ” added Abi.
The DRA will also be holding a special Picture Day on 23 June for which they will be appealing for more photos of the entire county to be brought in for scanning.
The DRA is located at Shilstone, near Modbury, PL10 0TW. For further information please visit the website:
